Lucerne Valley is between 3,000 and 4,000 feet above sea level. The town is approximately 500 square miles and has a population of over 8,000 residents per the 2000 census.
Lucerne Valley's weather is moderate with hot, dry summers and gets chilly in the winter, down in the 30's at night. For the last couple of years we have had snow flurries here and there and as late as April. Sunshine abounds at least 320 days a year.
Lucerne Valley has a sign coming into town that says, "Lucerne Valley a town with character(s)", and that's the truth! Everyone in Lucerne Valley has a story to tell. A lot of the older residents have been here for decades, and some families for generations so our community is rich in local history.
The Chamber of Commerce, the Lucerne Valley Market and the Janice Horst Library all have great books available for those who want to know more about the history of this little town.
Many smaller, family owned businesses prevail here such as The Burger Depot, Taylor Pump and Well Company, China House and the Two Little Indians.The Lucerne Valley Market, Butcher Block, and S.S. Hert are several of the bigger employers in town.
There are several mining operations in town. Mitsubishi Cement, Specialty Minerals and OMYA are all located here .They provide jobs for the community and they are generous to the community's schools, parks, and service organizations.
There are three schools, the Lucerne Valley Elementary School, and the Lucerne Valley Junior and Senior High, which share a campus.
The roads that lead in and out of town all converge at the one and only four way stop in town. Coming West from Apple Valley or Victorville Highway 18 turns right at the Y in the road and leads to Big Bear as well as going South on Barstow Road. Continuing pass the Y the road becomes Old Woman Springs Road and continuing straight will take you to Yucca Valley and Palm Springs. Turning North at Barstow Road will take you to Barstow and well as Las Vegas.
For a small town the amount of volunteers we have here is amazing.
People volunteer for the CSA 29 Parks and Recreation committee, Cemetery committee and Land Use committee. The Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT), the Friends of the Library, and so many more!
Social and community clubs and organizations include the Lucerne Valley Roadrunners, the Lions Club, the Fraternal Order of the Moose, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. The Boy and Girl Scouts are also meeting regularly as well as the 4-H group.
People move to Lucerne Valley for the beauty of the desert flora and fauna, the majestic views and the peace and quiet.
